William Williams was born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He served with the military in Pennsylvania and later was connected with the Exchange Bank of Pittsburg. In 1849 he moved to Iowa and stopped briefly in Muscatine before accompanying United States troops westward to establish the post of Fort Clark, which later became Fort Dodge.
